چکیده

Chronic ankle instability can be a disabling condition requiring surgical correction. The Brostrom procedure is the most common repair technique used for primary repair of the lateral ankle ligaments. Infrequently, this procedure fails and requires revisional surgery. Revisional cases necessitate augmentation to strengthen the repair. Highdemand athletes, patients with high Body Mass Indexes, and patients with conditions associated with ligamentous laxity may also require augmentation during the primary surgical procedure. Augmented repair techniques include use of xenografts, allograft repair techniques, and proprietary kits that use suture anchors, non-absorbable tape, and non-absorbable sutures to repair the ankle construct. Augmentation offers superior repair strength beyond the typical construct of a Brostrom repair and is indicated for use in revisional procedures and in patients with physically demanding lifestyles.

Biomechanical Analysis of an Arthroscopic Broström Ankle Ligament Repair and a Suture Anchor-Augmented Repair.

BACKGROUND Secondary surgical repair of ankle ligaments is often indicated in cases of chronic lateral ankle instability. Recently, arthroscopic Broström techniques have been described, but biomechanical information is limited. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the biomechanical properties of an arthroscopic Broström repair and augmented repair with a proximally placed suture anch...

Effect of peripheral afferent alteration of the lateral ankle ligaments on dynamic stability.

BACKGROUND The sensorimotor influence of the lateral ankle ligaments in muscle activation is unclear. HYPOTHESIS The lateral ankle ligaments have significant sensorimotor influence on muscle activation. STUDY DESIGN Controlled laboratory study. METHODS Muscle-firing characteristics in response to a high-speed inversion perturbation and during gait were assessed in 13 normal subjects. Solu...

Radiographic identification of the primary lateral ankle structures.

BACKGROUND Lateral ankle ligament injuries rank among the most frequently observed athletic injuries, requiring repair or reconstruction when indicated. However, there is a lack of quantitative data detailing the ligament attachment sites on standard radiographic views. PURPOSE To quantitatively describe the anatomic attachment sites of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), calcaneofibula...

Clinical outcome after anatomical reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligaments using the Duquennoy technique in chronic lateral instability of the ankle: a long-term follow-up study.

We performed a retrospective study to assess the long-term outcome of non-augmented anatomical direct repair of the lateral ankle ligaments, as originally described by Duquennoy et al, for the treatment of chronic lateral instability of the ankle. This procedure aims to restore stability by the re-insertion and tightening of the original talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments without divisio...

Immunohistochemical analysis of sensory nerve endings in ankle ligaments: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to analyze the pattern and types of sensory nerve endings in ankle ligaments using immunohistochemical techniques, in order to gain more insight into functional ankle stability. METHODS One hundred forty ligaments from 10 cadaver feet were included: the calcaneofibular and anterior/posterior talofibular ligaments from the lateral complex; inferior extensor...
